Over $6,800 in Grants Awarded in December, 2007As a result of growing sponsorship, the board members granted the following awards: District Wide - all students All Sports for All Students - $500 "Using a Nintendo Wii to level the playing field for students with special needs in a variety of individual or team sports. Students will respond to sensory input through participation in sports that they may not normally be able to participate in."
High School Science Club - $1,700 "To provide high school students with a forum where they are free to explore their interests in a particular science field that goes beyond the traditional classroom setting. The grants supports purchase of GPS tracking devices and the creation of an organic garden."
High School - Freshman Students Freshman Day - $3,500 "Freshman day is a two-day workshop modeled after the Challenge Day (featured on Oprah) that will engage 9th grade students and help them develop a deeper understanding of themselves and others. The goal is to enhance their ability to communicate and interact with people from diverse backgrounds."
High School - US History Students Oral History Project - $330 "Students will study the significance of oral histories, develop questions around a chosen topic, and then conduct interviews with Sun Prairie community members. The grants will purchase digital recording devices that allow students to record interviews. The histories will be compiled into a printed oral histories book."
Horizon Elementary First Graders Big Books for First Grade - $800 "Big books will be purchased and used in group reading and for individual student reading. The project will improve the literacy skills of first grade students."

Five December 2006 Grants Awarded... Due to the contributions made by supporters of the Sun Prairie Education Foundation, board members awarded five grants on December 6, 2006. Grant Awarded to Patrick Marsh for Breakfast with Books Program The board granted $500 to Sandy Kowalczyk, teacher at Patrick Marsh Middle School, to support Breakfast with Books. The program promotes enthusiasm for reading and learning, increases leisure time reading of middle school students, promotes healthy dietary habits, improves oral communication skills, and increases overall student success. The group will be made of up sixth grade students, and they will meet before school to eat breakfast, discuss books, and encourage reading.
