FAQ

Listed below is a series of answers to our most frequently asked questions for educators about our grant funding guidelines. If your question isn’t answered below, or you need further guidance, please send us a message using our contact form.

Who is Eligible for a grant?

Our grants are for nonprofit organizations certified as tax exempt under Sections 501(c)(3) or 170(c) and all SPASD employees, students and their parents.

What types of projects qualify for grant funding?

Our mission is to fund creative, out-of-the-box ideas that provide enriching hands-on learning experiences for Sun Prairie students. If your project idea inspires curiosity, imagination, and discovery in new and innovative ways, we encourage you to apply for a grant.

Check out our Grants in Action page to see inspiring project ideas from other teachers.

Are there any projects that aren’t eligible?

In general, we do not fund:

  • Annual funds, galas, or other special-event fundraising activities
  • Capital campaigns/renovation projects
  • Debt reduction
  • Emergency or disaster relief efforts
  • Dissertation or student research
  • Administrative or sub costs
  • Religious activities, political lobbying, or legislative activities
  • Institutions that discriminate based on race, creed, gender, or sexual orientation in policy or in practice
  • Loans, scholarships, fellowships, or grants to individuals

Do you fund general operating grants?

The vast majority of our grants are awarded for programmatic support.

Do you have geographic restrictions?

Yes. Grant funding is only available to projects within the Sun Prairie Area School District.

Is there a deadline for Grant Applications?

Yes. We consider Grant Requests twice per year, at the end of first and third quarters. Any grants submitted between review periods will be evaluated at the next Grant Application review meeting.

Who reviews the submitted Grant Application?

We have a Grant Committee responsible for reviewing Grant Applications and giving us recommendations. SPEF makes all final grant decisions.

What is the timeline for spending the Grant Award?

Winners have up to two years to spend the Grant Award.

Who should I call to discuss my project idea?

You may contact Terry Twedell at (608)837-2184 or Rebecca Ketelsen at (608)217-6789 to discuss your project idea.

If my Grant Application is not funded, may I reapply?

Yes. Applicants are welcome to reapply in the following grant cycle.

If your Grant Application is not funded, it may not mean your idea lacks merit or fails to meet our mission interests – we simply may not have the funds to award the grant at this time.
